Clear Debris From Your Lawn

Over the past few months, a collection of debris likely settled on your lawn. Before you can cut your yard with a riding mower or push mower, you'll need to clear the debris away. Otherwise, it can get caught up in your mower’s undercarriage. Plus, debris makes it harder for your yard to absorb the nutrient-rich products you'll apply later.

Prepare Your Mower

Lawn equipment that sat unused in storage won't be ready to operate at its optimal performance. You'll need to run through some standard maintenance tasks before using the equipment on your lawn. First, remove any debris from the undercarriage of your mower. Next, check that your blade is sharp. Dull blades can rip grass, which makes your lawn equipment less efficient as well as damaging to your yard. Sharpen the blade so that it can quickly cut through the grass and replace it when its due.

Owners of riding mowers will have a few extra steps. First, fill up the fuel tank. Next, change out the oil, air filter, and spark plugs if you didn't do this before storing your equipment.

Whether you own a push mower or a riding mower, you'll want to give your lawn equipment a quick inspection. Look for any issues that occurred during its time in storage and take it in for a service if you uncover any.

Nourish Your Lawn

Winter takes its toll on your garden. Nutrient-rich products help revive it back to optimal health. Many gardens benefit from fertilizer to promote growth. If your garden is susceptible to weeds and bugs, use the necessary products to prevent and kill those damaging influences.

Your yard likely needs products as well. For bare patches, plant new seed and water it daily until it gets tall enough to be cut. Hold off on your first mowing until its grown the same height as the grass around it or until it reaches two inches high. After your first mowing, add fertilizers to give nourishment and promote growth.

Cut Your Lawn

When the time comes to use your push mower or riding mower, let it warm in the sun for about an hour before using it. This will help facilitate an easier start-up. As you cut your yard, aim for removing 1/3 of the grass blade. Mow every five days for the first six weeks of spring. This prevents overgrowth, which leads to grass getting cut in a way that stunts the root.
